STRIVE FOR PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

I'm guilty of it. Striving for Perfection.

It's not realistic, however, and it keeps you from reaching your dreams. Whenever you feel the need to make something perfect, you either reassess what you've already done and deem it 'imperfect', thinking you have to keep fixing or start over. Or . . . your inner self starts spouting lies that you're not good enough to do what you are trying to do.

That's FALSE!

I've seen this play out numerous times in my own life, but it's more apparent when I'm watching others. I see them accomplish something incredible, but their next words tearing themselves down or how what they produced was full of errors. It seems to be an innate problem with humans.

Absolutely NO ONE can do something perfectly (or even very well), when they first try. It takes days, weeks, months or even years to 'perfect' skills and talents. In this 'instant gratification' society, everyone expects to attain perfection after very little true effort.

During the hard work of 'practicing,' . . . discouragement, disapproval and despair can take over. It becomes a battle that most are not willing to fight. For those with the fortitude to stick it out . . . to push through as they put in the lonely days and nights feeling nobody cares what they're doing . . . it reaps immense rewards.

Here's what the Bible says about perfection.

"But let patience have its perfect work,

that you may be perfect and complete,

lacking in nothing."

Patience.

That is what produces perfection.

It requires patience to do the work that will give you the ability and skills to accomplish what you dream of doing.

If you watched the video closely enough, you see that I made several errors when creating this post. I had to erase and do it again, until it was the way I imagined it. The end result is great, but I wasn't very pleased during the process, when I kept messing it up.

With patience and perseverance, I finally ended up with something I was happy with. The process can be messy, but the results can be more than worth the struggle.

That's been an especially important lesson for me as I've tackled the most difficult thing I have ever tried to do.

Writing a book.

Writing a book requires sticking it out through the times when the right word just doesn't come, or you can't figure out what should happen next, or there's no path to get from point A to point B in the story that doesn't feel wrong, cheesy or just plain . . . '?'.

Nope, nothing came to me just then when I was trying to figure out a third thing.

That's what happens while writing.

No matter what it is that you dream of doing,

give yourself the chance to reach for your dreams . . .

reach for the stars and you may hit the moon!

Be Patient
